Open Country, Inland
Situated in some of the finest land in a picturesque country, The Hills offers spacious panoramas, marshland and abundant natural flora. Work on the course began in 2002 and was completed in time to open for the 2007 New Zealand Open. Working its way over five hundred acres of a valley carved by glaciers, the design makes the most of the highly varied topography. Red Tussock bushes by the thousands enliven the surroundings with their bright colors; further visual flair is added by the sculptures by local artists that dot the grounds. The layout follows a mill stream that sustains the surrounding pools, and has soaring peaks as its backdrop. Like many modern courses, the championship layout incorporates a variety of tee positions to accommodate players of all levels. Be sure to call ahead, because this is a popular golfing destination; and for a not inconsiderable fee one of the groundskeepers will serve as a course guide.
