From the perspective of the USGA, Pebble Beach is to the US Open what St. Andrews' Old Course is to the British Open. Since the venue came to Pebble Beach in the early 1970s, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods have all had stunning victories here; this is where Woods came out on top in 2000 by a full fifteen shots. Located on the bluffs of Monterey, the club's surroundings are unmatched by any other US Open venue. Standout holes include the 7th, which plays longer than it seems when the breezes blow in and force a decision between using a 3 iron or a wedge; also the stretch from the 8th to the 10th features views of Carmel. The only major alteration has been to the 5th, formerly situated next to a cottage that the club was for long unable to purchase, and reworked by Nicklaus when the land was finally acquired.

What can one say about Pebble Beach Golf Links that hasn't already been said? It is the perfect golfing experience. If you are lucky enough to play in good weather, it is even more special. PB is historic in so many ways. Once you get the butterflies out after hitting that opening hybrid shot off one, the walk is very special. Please, if you play, make sure you get a caddy and walk. Otherwise, taking a cart is like ordering chicken at Peter Luger's Steakhouse -- its just not meant for that! I really think that holes 6, 7 and 8 are probably the most special three consecutive holes in all of golf, aside from Amen Corner. When I last played it in December 2018, I made Par on number 8, which was the highlight of my day because the hole is such a challenge. Even more to the point, they are narrowing the fairways considerably because of the 2019 US Open so be prepared to scramble. If there is one golf course to play in all of California, it has to be Pebble.

Played Pebble Beach twice, one of which with such great weather that even the caddie took out his camera and started taking pictures. The holes from 6 to 10 and 17-18 are fabulous and can only be spoilt by the typical slow play unfortunately experienced everywhere in the USA (but that’s a discussion for another day).
