Robert Trent Jones teamed up with Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum, ex-president of the USGA, to create the course for The Links at Spanish Bay that highlights their passion for links-style golf. Situated on ground from which sand was once quarried, the layout is designed for casual players, being less difficult and more affordable than such nearby clubs as Spyglass or Pebble Beach. So players of all kinds will have fun here, though the course is not without its challenges. The standout hole here is probably the long par five fourteenth, which offers a spectacular panorama at the tee, and that, while roomy enough, forces players to deal with wind, trees and the bounds line as they work toward a green that slants seaward. The driving range has to be reached by shuttle, and the locker room is restricted to guests of the resort, but these are minor inconveniences.
