From the perspective of the USGA, Pebble Beach is to the US Open what St. Andrews' Old Course is to the British Open. Since the venue came to Pebble Beach in the early 1970s, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods have all had stunning victories here; this is where Woods came out on top in 2000 by a full fifteen shots. Located on the bluffs of Monterey, the club's surroundings are unmatched by any other US Open venue. Standout holes include the 7th, which plays longer than it seems when the breezes blow in and force a decision between using a 3 iron or a wedge; also the stretch from the 8th to the 10th features views of Carmel. The only major alteration has been to the 5th, formerly situated next to a cottage that the club was for long unable to purchase, and reworked by Nicklaus when the land was finally acquired.
