American architect Gary Roger Baird, who learned his craft with Robert Trent Jones before branching out on his own, created a design for East Valley Country Club that works in classic native statuary. Like many courses in the Seoul area, the three nines here are located on steep slopes. The holes are fine, if not particularly memorable. The par 4s and 5s for the most part have the out-of-bounds along the fairways. A round here is certainly enjoyable, but the layout is fairly modest in size and the challenges are not the sort that one finds on a tournament course. Upkeep and service, though, are certainly top-notch, and the contemporary Spanish-style clubhouse is elegantly appointed with historic golf paraphernalia; there is, however, no driving range. East Valley is a very exclusive club, where those with means can escape the bustle of Seoul and enjoy the seclusion of forested valleys.
