The so-called Links course at Fancourt Country Club, it must be observed, is nearly ten miles from the coast, and the land was never covered by water, but it is an awfully good imitation of a links. Gary Player knows the great links courses of England, and has brought his learning to bear in recreating the details. The layout he created in conjunction with designer Phil Jacobs and Fancourt owner Hasso Plattner features fescue-covered artificial dunes, obscured shots, narrow targets and, at least in the warm season, fairways that are solid and quick; by a happy coincidence, the area is also subject to the kind of strong winds associated with links play. The course is sufficiently challenging to have attracted the 2003 Presidents Cup, the 2005 South African Open and the 2012 Volvo Golf Champions European Tour. Fancourt has made sustainability a goal and prides itself on being a Certified Audubon Cooperation Sanctuary.
