The Montagu, one of three courses at Fancourt Country Club, became recognized as one of the best in South Africa soon after opening over two decades ago. The design by Gary Player and club owner Hasso Plattner nevertheless left a little bit to be desired, so David McLay Kidd, whose father Jimmy superintended Gleneagles for twenty-five years, was brought in to brush things up. Thus adjustments were made to account for the encroachment of development on a number of holes, in particular the 1st and 9th. Most competitions at Fancourt tend to take place on the Links Course, but some venues, specifically the Dimension Data Pro-Am, make use of all three. The club is private, so play is by invitation only. All of the facilities and amenities are top-quality; the grounds include a brewery, a vineyard, a berry farm and a cheese-processing facility.
