Peter Matkovich, one of the most active architects in South Africa, designed the course for Arabella Country estate a ways outside Cape Town on a beautiful stretch of shore near Hermanus, and it is now considered one of the premier golf facilities in the country. The course is part of a housing development, and is stylistically of a piece with the club's reserved aesthetic. Matkovich wisely avoided the temptation of trying to ape English links; and, rather than creating artificial topography, his layout melds with its environs rather than dominating them. This is true parkland golf by the ocean. The site is on the lovely Bot Lagoon, and offers scenic views of the sea and the Palmiet Mountain Range in the other direction. An associated luxury hotel provides first-class accommodations. Arabella prides itself on adhering to the objectives of the Kogelberg Biosphere Preserve of which it is a part.
