Chris Pitman, Max Wexler
Originally designed by Max Wexler and launched in 1988, the 6,421 metres par 72 course was noted as the first buggy-only course in the region. Built at a reported cost of $1 million per hole, the course was lauded for its ‘natural appeal’, featuring soft gradients of rolling hills with spacious teeing areas and large greens. The ‘West Course’ as Tampines Course was originally referred to, has arguably an even richer array of vegetation and wildlife than its sister course, Garden Course.
In the mid 1990s, the course was given a ‘complete face-lift’ by renowned golf course shaper, Chris Pitman in collaboration with then Club Captain Tan Puay Huat. The aim was to eliminate drainage problems, re-turf and update the fairways and greens for aesthetics and challenging play. The club created three new holes for an exciting 21-hole play, in addition to the usual 18-hole between 2004 and 2009.
In the third quarter of 2009, Tampines Course was upgraded in three phases to improve the aesthetics and presentation as well as the playability of selected holes to bring it closer to the standards of Garden Course.
It has been the club’s philosophy to continue improve and develop our courses and club facilities for the benefits of members. As such in 2017, the Tampines was redeveloped and completed in 15 months. The stunning designed layout was soft opened on Monday, 30 April 2018.
The championship course, 6,887 metres, par 72 has been lengthened by 466 metres and designed by course deisgner, Phil Jacobs.
The course features beautiful water feature, gently rolling fairways, undulating greens, well-placed bunkers, calm lakes and parkland-style with trees to allow golfers long views of key points on the course. The gently rolling fairways is not the only challenge, as golfers may have to negotiate tricky pin positions if the ball is in the wrong quadrant of the green. Golfers will find that they need every club in their bag to turn in a good round.
Tampines will provide a truly unique memorable experience, good challenge and fun for all levels of golfers, including the professionals.
