Links Course, Seaside
David McLay Kidd
The 6180-meter, par 71 Castle, constructed in 2008, is the most recent of the seven courses managed by the St. Andrews Links Trust, which is the largest European golf complex open to the public. The Old remains the major draw, but for those who are in line for a chance on that legendary course, these others offer some fine golf. The Castle is a ways up the central route outside of St. Andrews at a place on the shore known as Kinkell Braes, on a rugged bluff with scenic views of the city. The environmentally sensitive setting abuts a meadow full of native flora and fauna, and natural rough defines the holes. David McLay Kidd is responsible for a layout in which the greens are unabashedly artificial and distinct from the level ground, an approach that was controversial enough for some to be reworked to be less contoured.
