Manila Golf Club has been an important part of the game in the Philippines since it opened in 1901; the first competitions in the country were held here, as was the Philippine Open continually for thirty-one years beginning in 1913. The club changed locations to its current site shortly after World War II, and the capital has since surrounded it. A thorough renovation was undertaken in 2007, overseen by Bob Moore of the JMP Golf Design Group in the US. Moore's work was so successful that Manila beat out Surrey's Wisely Club and Ireland's Balcarrick in Golf Inc.'s ranking of the best renovations in the world in 2009. The reinvigorated course boasts increased length (though it is still not long compared to most contemporary championship layouts), rebuilt tees and four reconstructed holes. Players at any skill level will find enjoyment and a challenge, provided that they can secure an invitation.
