course description

The setting for the Old Head Golf Links is spectacular and historic, a narrow peninsula, connected by a thin strip of land to the southern Irish coast that projects into the Atlantic. In this area countless ships have foundered, including the Lusitania, a passenger liner that sank in 1915 after a German U-boat hit it with a torpedo and in so doing helped to galvanize support for the entry of the US into World War I. The course plays out among the cliffs along the coastline, and so is not suited to those who are afraid of heights. And while a good score is definitely possible when the wind dies down, errant balls are apt to be lost forever to the sea. Nearly every hole along this remarkable course makes excellent use of the landscape; of particular note is the par 5 17th, set in the shadow of a lighthouse.
