course description

Founded in 1744, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers is the first of its kind in the world. Originally located just outside Edinburgh in Leith, the club moved first to Musselborough and finally to Muirfield in the late 1800s. It was here that Old Tom Morris came up with the idea of routing the holes so that the 9th returned to the clubhouse. The current eighteen, however, are the work of Harry S. Colt. Although it has not been established with certainty that the site was ever under the ocean, Muirfield has an unmistakably links feel, with dunes, brushy waste areas, fescue and gorse and strategically positioned pot bunkers. On occasions when the breezes die down, very good players may not find themselves challenged, though the greens are definitely tricky. Many competitions have been played here over the years, including in recent years the 2010 Amateur Championship.
