Lagunita Country Club is situated in the Caracas suburb of El Hatillo, and has hosted some top competitions—among them the World Team and World Championships and more than half a dozen Venezuelan Opens—that have brought in some top players, such as Irish champ Ronan Rafferty and Britain's Tony Jacklin. Carts are not permitted, but caddies are available and recommended. The 6256-yard, par 70 course, was designed in 1964 by then top US designer Dick Wilson, and it remains tough but a lot of fun. Trademark Wilson features here include large, unpredictable greens and massive but not deep bunkers. Water is a factor on two of the back nine, and the signature closing hole tops things off with a large and carefully protected green. Much of the grounds is well taken care of, though the sand used for the bunkers could be of higher quality, as could their manicuring.
