The South Course
The South Course at Torrey Pines, on the hills of Torrey Pines Mesa in La Jolla, California, is known for having hosted the Buick Invitational, a PGA Tour event, annually since it debuted in the Fifties. The layout, by the lesser known but quite skilled designer William Bell Sr., is one of two courses—the other being the fine but less demanding North Course—that are open to the public at this facility not far up the coast from San Diego. The management set its mind to attracting the US Open, so Rees Jones was brought in to do some major renovations in 2001, and sure enough, the 2008 US Open was played at Torrey Pines South, and won by none other than Tiger Woods. Indeed, some may even find themselves preferring this course to Pebble Beach; it certainly does offer some fine views of the Pacific.
