The rugged landscape of Hawaii presents golf architects with unique challenges. Manele, part of the Four Seasons' Lanai Resort, a typically spectacular setting, and there is no finer establishment in the archipelago. What makes the Challenge course here really stand out is its Jack Nicklaus pedigree. Of course every Nicklaus design is a challenge that is ready to take on any top golfer who shows up now or in the future. Unlike many Hawaiian layouts, which begin and end at the beach, the Challenge is set entirely on bluffs, which look out to the south. Some have compared the course to San Diego's Torrey Pines minus the development. The lack of proximity to the sea is more than compensated for by the scenery and by the amazing carries over valleys that the terrain demands. Keep your eye out for whales spouting out to sea during the winter months.
