Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Robert Trent Jones II designed this demanding course in the mountains of Maine an hour and a half north of the town of Poland, and there is simply no better in the state, and no better public course in the region. The setting offers spectacular panoramas of the Mahoosuc Mountain Range, and Jones makes the most of it. The difficulty comes from the topography and the strategy, for the fairways are generous and there are relatively few holes that play up slopes or feature forced carries. The 6th is especially memorable, a par 3 that works its way to a picturesque raised green. All the facilities are kept in tip-top shape despite the difficulties created by the climate and the elevation, something that sets Sunday River apart most other clubs in the mountains. The roomy clubhouse is done up in the manner of a log cabin and offers excellent food.
