Shady Canyon Golf Club has the ambience of the tony Orange County region down the coast from LA in which it is located. Leading architect Tom Fazio is not only adept at making the most of less-than-perfect ground, but he can also play to the strengths of a site that is already stunning. So it is that his 6411-meter, par 72 course at Shady Canyon follows the natural contours of the landscape over gently rolling hills, through natural brush and trees and into rock-strewn desert, all of which are in play at various points. Meandering Shady Creek and its tributary East Shady Creek, from which the club takes part of its name, are also part of the strategy throughout. Orange County is busy and bustling, but this corner of it is free of construction, and in fact borders the Quail Hill Nature Preserve, into which the back nine run.
