Donald Ross, Jack Nicklaus, Dr. Michael Hurdzan
Members and their guests
Legendary architect Donald Ross created the original layout for Scioto in the 1910s. Five important tournaments have been played at this members-only club near Columbus, Ohio: the US Open Championship, PGA Championship, US Amateur Open, US Senior Open and the Ryder Cup. But Scioto is especially renowned as the place where Jack Nicklaus was taught the game by his mentor Jack Grout, and the clubhouse is something of a shrine to St. Jack. Indeed, Nicklaus repaid his debt to the facility by teaming up with Michael Hurdzan in 2008 to refurbish the greens and generally to burnish Ross's vision. The classic layout is kind to casual players, but more experienced ones will be put to the test, particularly once they reach the greens. It is quite a thrill to golf where Jack golfed, and visitors can cap off the experience with a quick drive to the nearby Jack Nicklaus Museum.
