A hour north of Los Angeles (depending on traffic) lies one of the most underrated golf courses on the west coast, Rustic Canyon. I use underrated as a term that suggest most people never have heard of or consider Rustic Canyon on their trips to California. Today it consistently stays as a top 10 ranked public course in California and rightly so.
Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford laid out 18 holes set within its native surroundings.
After finishing you can’t help but think the course was built only needing a shovel and rake. If you play Rustic Canyon after playing some of the public tracks in LA your quickly understand what I mean. Whats pure and organic at Rustic Canyon is man made at most LA tracks.
A great walking loop it’s a perfect course to play 32 or more during your day. The course doesn’t beat you up, with wide fairways and honest greens that always roll true. Hole 8 a par 3 is the hole I remember the most. It’s short at only 125 yards but plays into a raised green that may be the smallest on the course. You have 7 holes to warm up your wedge game before really needing a good shot.
In 2010 the course was ranked number one in best value in the US. With many ways to find value at Rustic Canyon start by simply looking on their website for great rates. Make sure you get Rustic Canyon on your play list during your next trip to Los Angeles you won’t be disappointed.
