There are a lot of smiles on the faces of the pros when the PGA Tour announces that Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, has come up in the rotation, and it is no wonder, since the club is very exclusive, and features outstanding amenities. George Cobb created the initial layout in 1961, and Tom Fazio was brought in to carry out renovations in 1977. The result is a course that is a real test from the tips, and no cakewalk from the forward tees. Among the challenges are water hazards and bunkers around the very quick greens. The front nine and the first holes on the back nine are fun, but things get rough beginning with the 14th, and the trio of closing holes, known as the Green Mile, have produced the highest median scores of any similar stretch on the PGA Tour; the 18th especially is unsurpassed for difficulty.
