Pioneering architect Perry Maxwell outdid himself with this vintage links-like course at Prairie Dunes just outside Hutchinson, Kansas, when he laid it out in 1935. The modest entryway belies the fine facilities within, which begin with a clubhouse that offers a splendid panorama of the grounds. The land here is level, and the real challenges are the strong and nearly constant prairie breezes and the ball-hungry prairie flora that form the rough. And while it is of course far from the sea, the course nevertheless does call to mind the links of England. Prairie Dunes caters to golfers of various skill levels with its generous selection of tees, and all players will appreciate the impeccable maintenance. The club has hosted the US Women's Open and US Senior Open, as well as the Curtis Cup and numerous amateur tournaments, most notably the Men’s NCAA Golf Championship in 2014.
