Lake Merced in San Francisco is ringed with golf courses: the public Harding Park and the private Lake Merced Golf Club, San Francisco Golf Club and Olympic Club. The latter's Lake course opened for play in 1924, and has since hosted five US Opens, the most recent in 2012. Renovations in recent years have thinned the trees somewhat and refinished all of the putting areas. Part of the motivation for this work was the problems players encountered on the 18th green during the 1998 US Open, which led to some over-correction. The layout is very demanding, so don't be too disappointed if you come away with some bogies. The halfway house is known for serving a hamburger on a hotdog bun, and the clubhouse is gorgeous. The club's other course, the Cliffs, is a fun little par 3 layout that features excellent panoramas of the sea.
