Ben Crenshaw & Bill Coore
Every golf course architecture firm with any ambition has a showpiece somewhere in Hawaii, and for the dynamic design duo of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore that showpiece is the Plantation Course that they created for Kapalua, one of the islands' premier golfing establishments. The esteem in which their layout is held can be seen in the fact that the US Tour opens each season here with its Champions competition, where the players are all Tour victors from the previous year. Crenshaw and Coore overcame the obstacles posed by the rugged landscape in order to produce a layout that makes the most of the marked changes in elevation and the winds off the Pacific. While none of the early greats of golf design were able to leave their mark in Hawaii, Kapalua's Plantation course gives you some idea of what classic golf could have been like here.
