Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw
The Hamptons and such fabled clubs as The National and Shinneckock Hills come to mind when people think of golf in eastern Long Island, but there is a sleepier area nearby known as the North Fork, where old houses and fishing boats are nestled around little bays. The private course at Friar's Head (where proper attire is a must) is located here, and the design by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw blends right in with the quaint ambience, recalling Cypress point with its gleaming sands. There are some idiosyncrasies to the layout, such as a par 4 that is short but can be driven. Scorecards here take no account of the stroke index or yardages, since these figures would be meaningless in the face of the constantly changing breezes off the sea. The walking-only layout is, overall, enjoyable and scenic, though the luxury clubhouse is a bit much.
