Tom Fazio designed the course for Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest IL, about an hour north of Chicago, in 1991. At a sizable 6156 meters, this is still a walking course, with caddies for hire. The layout is challenging but quite lovely, being set amid native wetlands. The holes are of various shapes and sizes. A number of short par 4s will put players to the test, such as the doglegged 342-yard 15th, which plays to the left beside a large pond to an hourglass green protected by a pair of imposing bunkers. The signature hole is the 520-yard 8th, which confronts golfers with a ball-eating bunker that is simultaneously towering and cavernous. Among the tournaments that Conway Farms has hosted are a Division I NCAA Championship and a Western Amateur Championship. Upkeep is superb, and among the amenities are immaculate hitting turf and a fine driving range.
