The Chicago Golf Club has long maintained a reputation as the finest golfing establishment in America's Third City, and it's easy to see why. First, there is the experience of playing North America's first full eighteen. Second, the layout, by C. B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor, is superb. Lastly, any golfing celebrities who are in town are likely get a round in here if they can; just ask Davis Love III. There is a rustic feeling to the grounds, despite the fact that the club is surrounded by housing. Horseshoe bunkers, a variety of hole lengths, a Redan hole, impeccable maintenance—this course has it all. There is no easing in to a round, for the opening trio is as challenging a stretch of holes as you'll find anywhere, a pair of par 4s followed by a 220-yard par 3. The modest clubhouse reinforces the fact that this club is all about the golf.
