Cleveland's Canterbury Golf Club is an Ohio institution. Herbert Strong created the original design in 1922, and Geoffrey Cornish and Bruce Hepner have since undertaken renovations. This lovely, vintage course receives the superlative maintenance that it deserves. At 6346 meters, the par 72 layout is enjoyable, but it is no cakewalk. Be sure to have some extra balls, because gusty breezes are frequent, and some of the holes are real bruisers, in particular the trio at the end. The 16th measures 608 yards, the 17th 215 yards, and the 18th 430 yards and plays uphill to a green defended by bunkers. Canterbury began attracting top competitions within a decade after opening and has been the venue for more than a dozen in the years since. The clubhouse has been refurbished in the past few years, and features an attentive and welcoming staff and amenities including reception areas for gatherings.
