Haenam is called Korea's Mediterranean, and it is easy to see why at Pine Beach Golf Links, which overlooks picturesque inlets and islets. The club, which opened in 2009, is hoping to be seen as the country's answer to Pebble Beach. The clear weather that averages 68 degrees is perfect for play, and for making the most of the sea vistas that are offered by many of the holes. The signature hole is the 15th, a par 3 not unlike Cypress Point's 16th, with a tee shot over water to a green surrounded by water on three sides and protected by gleaming bunkers, all framed by the pounding surf and open sky. The routing keeps things interesting, with holes that play along the shore on both the front and back nines. A variety of teeing options accommodates all kinds of golfers; the greens are generous, but quite quick.
