Cliffs (Keowee Vineyards) (SC)
Tom Fazio laid out the course for the Cliffs of Keowee Vineyards on a prime piece of land set amid stunning views of the neighboring state park, the surrounding hills and the lake and vineyards from which the facility takes its name. Fazio's course makes the most of varied topography that is tough but playable for newcomers as well as old hands. Even the rock and timber contemporary clubhouse seems to emerge from the landscape. There are some great holes here, including carefully conceived and fiercely bunkered par 4s, breathtaking par 5s where the lake is in play, and a great run of closing holes: the par 3, single-shot 16th and 17th, the latter, which plays downhill to a green surrounded on three sides by water, was described by Fazio in a less modest moment as " maybe the most picturesque hole in South Carolina," and ending with a dogleg 18th.
