Tom Watson, multi-British Open winner and lover of links, pays homage to storied holes at such legendary Scottish and Irish clubs as Carnoustie, Lahinch and Troon with his design for the Cassique Course at Kiawah Island Club. His layout brings links-style play to a wetlands site, including four holes early in the back nine that are well wooded. Water is often in play, including a greenside hazard on the left side of the 18th. Overall the course is nicely proportioned, with all the challenges out in the open. Standout holes include the 4th, which has two possible fairways and greens, and the 5th, which has two possible tees. Maintenance is unsurpassed, and the clubhouse is a bit of Old Ireland that looks out over the wetlands and dunes to the sea. Kiawah Island is a haven of serenity and tradition for its members, and a great experience for any lucky enough to play here.
