A neat and tricky ocean course close to the city center. Not a very long golfcourse but still a good test with small elevation changes and some tall fescue grass earing up errant tee shots. The clubhouse has similarities to St. Andrews.
Playing at North Berwick earlier this year has been such an amazing day !! It started with a walk down the streets of Edinburgh with my bag on the back and a train ride. The adventure was already great even before my first shot. All people at the club really made me feel very welcome, thumb up to all of them ! The West Links is a really really great track !! A lot of nice holes, some pretty quirky on the back nine, but I really loved all of them. Holes #13-16 stretch is one of the most memorable I ever played. Cherry on the cake, I played very well that day, including 3 birdies ! I can't recommend highly enough !!
I heard a lot of good things about the West Links and had high expectations before playing it. After the round I can say that the course lived up to its reputation. Many great architects from past and present used certain features and holes of North Berwick as inspiration for their own work. The most copied par 3 in the world is for example North Berwick's 15th hole called Redan - the green slopes severly from right to left and a bunker is guarding the front of the green. The sensible play is to hit the right side of the green and see your ball roll towards the pin.
Anyway, North Berwick West Links is a classic in and out links course. The 1st and 18th hole play very similar as the same holes at the Old Course of St Andrews. So the wide fairway eases you in the round. The first standout hole is the cape style par 4 2nd hole. The beach on the right is in play and you can shorten the hole off the tee significantly if you choose an aggressive line.
My favourite hole is also the quirkiest of the course. The famous par 4 13th hole called Pit. A stone wall is guarding the green. Quite an unique hole it is! The 16th hole features one of the craziest Biarritz style greens I've seen in my life. Find your ball on the wrong plateau and you can be happy about a 3-putt. Similar to the Old Course the 18th hole features a street on the right side. I was quite nervous on the tee!
Make sure to go for a drink in the clubhouse after your round. You will have a wonderful view of the 18th hole!
