Architect David McLay Kidd, whose father for a quarter century managed the courses at Gleneagles and now works at his son's firm, has become an established name in design circles for making the most of excellent landscapes, as he did at Bandon Dunes on the Oregon Coast. His location here, on the outer side of the Mull of Kintyre, is perfect links country. Kidd worked his way through the regulations that protect the plants and animals in this delicate environment, coming up with a design that minimized excavation and the use of large earth-moving equipment. The result is a handmade course in the classic style that melds seamlessly with the terrain on which it has been built. Since opening in 2009, Machrihanish Dunes has received praise for its scenic location, the quality of the resort experience and for sustainability.
