Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers, James Braid
East Lothian is known for North Berwick and Muirfield, but visitors to the area around the Firth of Forth should try to visit Dunbar, which is equally venerable if not as storied. The course is an authentic links in a remote and enchanting setting, except that is for the neighboring cement plant. In fact, the plant and the course are under the same ownership, and there seems to be some sensitivity to what Dunbar represents. The best part of the layout is the middle stretch along the coastline, which offers spectacular ocean views of May Island and Bass Rock. Some of the holes are edged by the old rock walls of the town, but things open up and play becomes subject to gusts off the shore; it is here that the specific toolkit for links golf is required. So figure the distances carefully and shoot low.
