Desert Golf Course
Qatar lags behind the other Emirates somewhat when it comes to golf, particularly in comparison to Dubai, but it is starting to make a name for itself with the Doha Golf Club, the country's first. The aim from the start was to create a course that would attract the kind of marquee competitions that generate positive press for small, relatively obscure countries like Qatar. Naturally the club is home to Qatar Masters. Though it is located near the Arabian Gulf just north of the capital city, the ocean figures little in the strategy of the course. Trees grow slow in the arid environment, so the course is still maturing. The front and back nines are distinct, the former being somewhat featureless, but the latter making nice use of the stark desert landscape. Measuring well over 6500 yards, the layout has considerable length, but the wind is rarely a factor so epic drives are possible.
