Tom Fazio really outdid himself with the course at the members-only Sand Ridge Golf Club, which dates to the late 1990s. (Since a merger with the Mayfield Country Club in 2006, the establishment has become known as Mayfield Sand Ridge.) Fazio's 6517-meter achievement is simply beautiful, being set on a fine piece of land near Chardon, a town northeast of Cleveland, that features forests, farmland and marshes. The intriguing layout has attracted a number of qualifying events for such championships as the NCAA Men's Division I, US Junior and Senior amateurs and even the US Open. It is eminently walkable, impeccably maintained and offers nice views of the approach to the Allegheny Mountains. Among the standout holes is the signature 5th, which plays well over four hundred yards to a double green with a bunker in between, so that players must choose between navigating the hazards or a dogleg.
