Golf at Royal Portrush goes back to 1888, when it emerged as the first of a number of historic clubs along the River Bann, along with Portsteward and Castelrock. The club was attracting the Irish Professional and Amateur Championships by 1900, and tournaments continue to be played on the premier site for competitions in Northern Ireland. Royal Portrush has been particularly amenable to women's golf, being the first club outside Britain to host the British Ladies Amateur Championship (an honor it has enjoyed seven more times). Among men's events, the Amateur Championship returned in 1960, when native Joe Carr won, and in 1993, when Iain Pyman won; and in 1951 Max Faulkner won the Open Championship here. The standout hole on the Dunluce Links is undoubtedly the 14th, the so-called Calamity Corner, known as one of the world's finest short holes for the accuracy required to make the carry to the diminutive target.
