Haagsche, founded in 1893, is the earliest club in the Netherlands. The course was designed by Harry S. Colt some forty years later; it was one of his later projects, and the work itself was managed by his protégé, Hugh Allison. Since Colt's reputation has only grown over the years, his layouts have come to be considered heirlooms, and every effort is made to maintain or to restore his original vision and style. The task of managing Colt's legacy has been taken up by Frank Pont in the Netherlands, and at Haggsche his brief includes wholesale revamping of the greens and reproducing Colt's design as faithfully as possible. Thus when the clubhouse burned in 2003, it was rebuilt with period architecture. Situated a few miles from the beach, the links-like course moves among towering sand dunes and trees that were planted by Colt and Allison themselves.
