Robert Trent Jones Sr. was known for being able to create a great course in challenging conditions, and his son Robert Trent Jones II has carried on the tradition. His layout for The Mines Resort and Golf Club in the city of Sed Kembangan, Malaysia, is perched on the edge of what had been an enormous mine, and is now an enormous lake. Jones II took on the precipitous slopes and reclaimed polluted earth, bathing the site in sand and providing it with a first-class drainage system, in order to create a lovely course where one would least expect it. At 6656 meters, the layout has championship length, and here it was that Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara clinched the 1999 World Cup for the US. If any complaint can be made, it would have to be that the greens suffer from too much contouring given the size of the targets.
