Ross Watson of Australia created the layout for Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, which opened its doors in 1998. The charming name is from a Malay word denoting tranquility or loveliness, and the beautifully landscaped setting does not disappoint. The club is part of a large community, and has earned such a reputation for itself that the clubhouse had to be increased to twice its original size during renovations a few years ago. Built to serve the neighboring residents, the design accommodates players of all skill levels, though recent renovation has brought it up to nearly 6400 meters off the tips, enough for championship play. And indeed the club has hosted the Asian Nations Cup, the Volvo Asian Masters and the European Tour Malaysian Open. The tropical environment informs the layout, which is reminiscent of courses in the US, with thick fairways and nicely sculpted greens that grow luxuriantly.
