The island of Sardinian has in recent years developed into an important center for Italian golf, and Is Arenas, in the west, has earned recognition as one of the area's top new offerings since its opening at the turn of the last century. Laid out amid evergreen forest and sand dunes, the picturesque shoreline is almost constantly in sight. The design was a joint effort by Robert von Hagge, Michael Smelek and Richard Baril, and they took pains to exhaust the possibilities of the exquisite site that they had been given. Sardinia's beautiful native flowers are evident throughout the course, especially around the clubhouse, and like the rest of the course are superbly maintained. Is Arenas simultaneously appeals to the experienced strategist and the casual player. The design team's American background comes out in the abundant water hazards, though these do not do that much to enhance the experience.
