Italian architect Piero Mancinelli designed the Championship course in the Seventies based on preliminaries sketches by Henry Cotton and Frank Pennink. Located on the coast in the south of the island of Sardinia, Is Molas is relatively less exposed to the elements than are more northerly courses like Pevero. The Championship blends well into the untamed natural landscape out of which it has been carved, making its way through native brush and grasses. There is a nice variety of challenges, including water hazards on six of the holes. Top pros have played here in their prime, from Seve Ballesteros to Bernhard Langer to Ian Woosnam to Vijay Singh, who was victorious in the 1989 Volvo Open. So while there are to be sure excellent courses near Italy's larger cities, those with a real passion for the game will make the trip to Sardinia to enjoy fine facilities like Is Molas.
