St. Leon-Rot and Hamburg shared the European Tournament Players Championship, an event overseen by SAP and Deutsche Bank, for most of a decade. Yet neither of these two locations was really equal to the prestige of the venue, so SAP resolved to bring the St. Leon-Rot, which it owns and operates, up to snuff. The renovations by Dave Thomas have fulfilled this brief. Though his raw material was some quite level agricultural fields, the designer managed to craft artificial contours, somehow staying within the strictures of German land use regulations (it has been suggested that SAP's influence may have greased the rails). When championship play did then come to St. Leon, Thomas must have felt a little put out when he was compelled to make further adjustments since recent improvements in golf technology had defanged many of his hazards. In any case, the course is a fair enough test for amateurs.
