The keen interest in golf in Germany in the Eighties was fueled in part by Bernhard Langer's success. Kurt Rossknecht is among the German designers who caught that wave, and his reputation has kept pace with the continued expansion of the game here. Rossknecht's course at Motzener See gave him a chance to show off what he learned from studying American designers, specifically how they manage to create great holes out of unimpressive ground. The contours here are without doubt artificial, but then again there is something distinctly English about the bunkers. The sculpting on the greens is similarly artificial, but quite reasonable. In general, the course has a nice balance in the way the fairways and greens fit into the allotted space. Motzener See has hosted championships almost from the day it opened, including four German Masters. The contemporary-styled clubhouse deserves mention for its wide variety of goods and services.
