Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw
Bill Coore, whose work as an architect brought him into association with Ben Crenshaw, laid out the Châteaux Course at the Golf du Médoc Resort outside Bordeaux in 1989, and he returned to carry out renovations some twenty years later. The Chateaux is a links-style course that plays out over fairly even ground. Coore's less-is-more design melds with the landscape, giving it a timeless feel. The renovations increased the difficulty of the course by lengthening it (to 6316 meters) through the creation of some new back tees, and by toughening up the bunkering. As an homage to the region's famous vineyards, each hole represents a local vintage, all eighteen of which can be sampled at the clubhouse. Despite the proximity of the city of Bordeaux, the club has an open, rural ambience, and the recent addition of a hotel and other amenities create something of the feel of a destination resort.
