The World Woods Corporation has made it its mission to scour the planet for the most promising land for golf, and it has hit pay dirt with the Pine Barrens, one of a pair of courses on this two thousand-plus acre location outside Tampa. Indeed, no less a savant than former USGA president Joe Black has been quoted as saying that Pine Barrens is Florida's Pine Valley. The design was created by Tom Fazio, who had already built a mini ten-holer for that famous New Jersey establishment that mimicked the main course. The site here is carved out of thick woodlands, in marked contrast with so many courses in the state, which seem like themeparks. Measuring right around 6400 meters, the layout was deemed sufficiently challenging for the 2003 Shell Wonderful World of Golf match to be played here, when David Toms went up against Phil Mickleson.
