Members and their guests
Somerley Park Golf Club opened in 1995 and was the vision of John Staley (who was then the Estate Manager) and Bob Curtis who is a director of Somerley Golf Ltd. As a former member in those summery days of 1995, (the sun always shines when we look back doesn’t it) I, along with my wife Margaret, we were joining a Club which, in my view, was unique. Membership was limited to 125 and the annual fee was 250.By the way, I know the summer of 1995 was good because I have distinct memories of John Staley struggling with a huge hose from a water bowser every night trying to keep the greens alive (there was no sprinkler system in those days).Over the years Committees and Captains have come and gone and, by the nature of things, some made a greater impact than others. The first Captain was Frank Allingham (1995-6) followed by Geoff Absalom (1996-7), and then Reg Lowey became Captain in 1997 and continued until 2000.It is my opinion that Reg (who sadly is no longer with us) made a huge contribution to establishing the structure and spirit of the Club, e.g. the monthly mixed greensomes which evolved into the monthly Texas Scrambles, and the “weekly roll-ups”.Rennie Marshall, still a member and then Cliff Edwards (now living in Australia) followed Reg. From 2002 to 2004, the job was taken by myself and then as you all know from 2004 until the present time Henry Fry became Club Captain.Henry along with Eric Geary is working very hard on the course itself and I would like to pay tribute to them both (and others) who are getting over the tremendous problems forced by all the changes to the Course.
