Lee-on-the-Solent is a rare jewel in terms of modern golf trends. This Parkland / Heathland style of course is over 100 years old but has managed to resist the standard of extending its length in answer to modern technology improvements in equipment. The course measures just 5962 yards from the back tees but with a par of 69 really does set a very good test for all standards of golfer. Accuracy is a must and course strategy is of the utmost importance to plot your way around. An unusual point is the course comprises of back-to-back par fives on the front half and back-to-back par threes on the back nine. The five par threes are one of reasons for the overall lack in Lee’s yardage but all are excellent and very different challenges. Varying in length from the 145 yard 9th with its two tier green and protective hazard for those under clubbing, through to the 216 yard 14th which requires a long and accurate shot to avoid the Out of Bounds on the left and the bunker and slope to the right. The course is also renowned for its excellent finishing stretch of 6 holes which include three par 3s and 3 tough par 4s which all require accuracy not only from the tee but into the greens too. In particular the 15th hole, a narrow hole which at 430 yards in length but playing into the prevailing left to right wind which is almost always present, merits its stroke 1 index. Also playing into the wind, the eighteenth at 420 yards long with Out of Bounds all the way down the left hand side requires an accurate tee shot and a precise approach into a green well protected with bunkers. All in all this course offers an enjoyable days golf for all levels of player, with its easy on the legs terrain you will be mentally tested rather than physically worn out on the day.
