Alister MacKenzie

Cavendish is recognised as one of the finest golf courses in Britain offering a great golfing experience. Cavendish is thought by some to be Dr MacKenzie’s most accomplished work in the UK and quite possibly the best layout in the world under 6000 yards. It illustrates how skilfully and creatively he blended the layout of the golf course into the surrounding landscape. Nothing jars the eye, nor distracts from the beauty of the natural setting. Those outstanding course design skills, which brought Alister MacKenzie international acclaim when he created the magnificent Augusta National course, in association with Bobby Jones, were developed and honed during his formative years in Great Britain. Cavendish exemplifies MacKenzie’s belief that “length has nothing to do with the quality of a hole” and is considered the ‘best preserved and most authentic MacKenzie course in the world’.

Talk about a hidden gem, this Alistair Mackenzie classic has been naturally formed in a truly stunning setting, the views from every hole are breathtaking!! The 10th and 11th are two of the best back to back par 4's I've played and the par 3's offer a good risk and reward but be careful the greens are lightning fast and well undulated. I've not played Augusta (obviously) but have watched the Masters for many a year so I can see why they claim that Mackenzie drew his inspiration from Cavendish. The pro shop offered a warm welcome on arrival as did the well presented clubhouse, the food is reasonably priced and good value. I would highly recommend playing Cavendish, you could even take a tour by play the Cavendish Trail which is made up of several nearby courses that were all designed by Alistair Mackenzie.
