Broadstone is my favourite of the fine heathland tracks in the Bournemouth area. One of my playing partners described it as ‘a big boy’s course’ and I know what he meant! It’s a large tract of land with some very demanding holes and you wouldn’t volunteer to play it twice in a day! But it is spectacular and memorable and the welcome in the shop and the bar was as inviting as some of the drives from the most elevated tees.
One of my measures of a good course is how many of the holes you remember on the way home. Every hole at Broadstone is different and distinctive.
If I was being picky, there are a couple bordering on the perverse (I didn’t get the 7th at all!!) and you need a good bounce here and there, but it feels like a pretty raw and natural course that continually dares you to take it on from the moment you flirt with the ditch running through the 1st fairway.
I can’t recall a blind shot (apart from the six I hit on that damned 7th!!) and so the size of the challenge is always in front of you. Beautiful views and wildlife across rolling, sprawling terrain decorated by heather and gorse. I’m not sure my legs would want me to be a member but this ‘big girl’ visitor will definitely return... if only to work out the 7th!!!!
